Creative Writing Awards

Gulf Coast Association of Creative Writing Teachers Awards / Deadline: February Six awards are given for undergraduate and graduate writing in fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction. No application process: candidates will be nominated and selected by CRW faculty. John Mackay Shaw Academy of American Poets Award / Deadline: Wednesday, February 27th, 2019, by 5 p.m. The English Department's Awards Committee will judge the submissions.

Cody Harris Allen Award / Deadline: Wednesday, February 27th, 2019, by 5 p.m.

All Western Illinois University undergraduates, regardless of major, are welcome to submit their nonfiction writing to the Lois C. Creative nonfiction can include essays about life experiences–though these may fit into any of the following categories: travelogue, memoir, biography, autobiography, nature writing, or cultural critique.

Both voice and style will be weighed heavily in the judging.

The English Department's Awards Committee will judge the submissions. Miriam Bailey Creative Writing Thesis Award / Deadline: October $500 to a student actively working on an MFA thesis and regarded as having particular promise.

No application process: candidates will be nominated and selected by CRW faculty.

The Shuman Award for Best Honors Thesis in Creative Writing will be awarded to the best creative honors thesis.

The Shuman Junior Award in Literature will be awarded to the best junior English Literature major.

The English Department's Awards Committee will judge the submissions.
